Physiological quality of pitaya seeds under storage in different packaging and environmental conditions during 12 months

Thiago Alberto Ortiz
Abstract

Pitaya comprises a group of exotic cacti species, with the genus Hylocereus being appreciated for its nutritional value and morphological characteristic of the fruit. Because it is a species that can be propagated by seeds, it is necessary to evaluate the storage conditions to know the conditions favorable to preserving the physiological quality of seed batches. For this reason, this research aims evaluate the physiological quality of pitaya seeds under storage in different packaging and environmental conditions during twelve months. The experiment was conducted with Hylocereus undatus seeds, in a completely randomized design, with 4 replications of 50 seeds, in a 3 × 3 × 12 factorial scheme [packaging (white Kraft paper bag, polythene bag and polypropylene bag), storage environment (ambient, refrigerator and cold chamber) and storage period (from 1st to 12th months, monthly)]. To evaluate the physiological quality of seeds, a germination test was conducted and the variables analyzed were germination, germination speed index (GSI), and mean germination time (MGT). The data were subjected to variance analysis and, when significant, adjustments were made to regression models with quadratic terms. Pitaya seeds (H. undatus) in cold chamber have their physiological quality preserved in paper, polythene, or polypropylene packaging during 12 months of storage. In the other storage conditions evaluated, the storage period should be reduced, given its negative effect on the physiological quality of pitaya seeds.
