EVALUATION OF ANATOMICAL STRUCTURE, GROWTH, AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF Toxocarpus villosus SPECIES USED AS SUPPLEMENTARY FEED FOR LIVESTOCK

Phung Thi Hang
Abstract

This study was conducted with a wild plant that grows naturally in uncultivated lands in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, Toxocarpus villosus (Blume) Decne. The purpose of this research was to examine the potential of T. villosus to be supplemented in feeding livestock through parameters related to the anatomical morphology of species, growth, and antimicrobial ability. The plant samples were collected in Vinh Long and Tien Giang provinces, identified based on morphology, examined anatomical structure and observed the growth rates (the size of somatic organs and yield) by growing under the net-house condition for two months. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity of samples was evaluated by using agar well diffusion and determination of MICs in four tested bacterial species (including both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus). The results showed that T. villosus was easy to cultivate, moderate growth rate (fresh leaf yield at 5.23 tons ha-1), the anatomical structure contains high levels of fiber, and the ethanol leaf extract can resist these examined bacteria.
