MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION, EVALUATION AND SELECTION OF SUPERIOR JACKFRUIT (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) GENOTYPES

M.Kavino
Abstract

A survey on seedling populations of jackfruit was conducted in Pudukkotai district of Tamil Nadu, India with an objective to select the superior genotypes with small- sized fruits for the nuclear family. Totally, 125 genotypes were identified, of which 40 genotypes were selected based on the fruit size weighing around two to six kilograms. These forty genotypes were then evaluated consecutively three years for morphometric and quality attributes based on IPGRI jackfruit descriptor. Among the different traits observed, tree canopy shape showed much variation (seven groups) followed by fruit shape (six groups). The principal component analysis showed that the five components were identified as significant and yielded a cumulative variation of 84.60%. The cluster analysis showed that genotypes grouped into two distinct clusters. The cluster I showed that three groups consisted of thirteen genotypes, while cluster II showed four groups comprised of 27 genotypes. Linear regression analysis showed that the number of fruits per tree is having a linear positive correlation with yield per tree with a coefficient of 0.73. Based on the yield and yield contributing attributes and organoleptic test, the genotypes namely AH-11, AH-13, AH-24, AH-33 and AH-35 were found promising
