FLORISTIC DIVERSITY AND ETHNOMEDICINAL STUDIES OF TEHSIL GULABPUR DISTRICT SHIGAR GILGIT BALTISTAN PAKISTAN

Abstract


The present study was intended to explore the ethno-medicinal importance of plants of Tehsil Gulabpur District Shigar, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. Consecutive field trips were arranged to document the information from the inhabitants of the area by means of semi-structured individual interviews, and group discussions. The study was conducted from March 2020 to September 2020. There were 64 plant species, 34 families, and 59 genera which were used for various purposes in the study area. Out of 64 plants 42 were herbs, 14 shrubs and only 06 were trees. The most medicinally significant families were Fabacae 09 species, followed by Asteraceae 06 species. It was observed that the whole plant (65%) used to treat different diseases. Excessive use for ethnomedicinal purposes, deforestation, and overgrazing is the main threats to these plants. Awareness sessions should be organized to aware of the significance of medicinal plants for the local people to know the appropriate collection, usage, and plantation. The valley should be further explored in the search for unexplored medicinal plants.
