A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW ON BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF SESAME (SESAMUM INDICUM L.)

Abstract


Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), is an important oilseed crop that has been cultivated since ancient times for its edible oil and seed in the Indo-Pak subcontinent. It is known as the king of oilseeds. It has of seed-oil content of up to 65%, high protein and antioxidant content and has, therefore, been extensively used in food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. The main aim of this review is to provide comprehensive details on origin, botany and taxonomy of sesame. An extensive and detail study was carried out using various search engines and books, like Google Scholar, Web of Science, SciFinder, PubMed etc. Other literature resources like Wikipedia, botanical books, chapters were also studied to get most records viable at the Sesamum indicum. This review mainly highlights the botanical aspect of Sesamum indicum and its origin and taxonomical classification. Although more research is needed to uncover key features of Sesamum indicum as its flower is very delicate and sensitive so more work and studies are required for in depth understanding of its botanical nature and how it could be useful in medicine and other fields.
