SANOBER KAMAL
Abstract

- Gloriosa superba, known as Flame lily or Glory lily and belonging to Colchicaceae family, has a rich history of medicinal use, particularly in rural areas of Asia. Traditionally employed for its therapeutic properties, this plant demonstrates antibacterial effects, antioxidant activity against free radicals, anti-inflammatory capabilities, anthelmintic properties, and anticoagulant effects. Notably, it exhibit as a valuable source of essential phytochemicals such as colchicines and colchicocides, which find application in modern medicine despite their high cost. Colchicine, a derivative, holds promise in treating serious conditions like cancer and preventing heart-related ailments such as pericarditis. In contemporary times, Gloriosa superba has gained prominence for its role in providing colchicine as an alternative to NSAIDs, especially for individuals with NSAID allergies. Various chemical compounds, including colchicine, 3-Demethyl-N-formyl-N-deacetylcolchicine, 3-demethylcolchicine, and N-formyl deacetylcolchicine, have been isolated from different parts of the plant, with tubers and seeds being the primary sources. This present study aims to explore the occurrence, botanical characteristics, biological activities, and toxicological aspects of Gloriosa superba, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of its profile for research purposes.
