Enhancing Peanut Breeding THrough Speed Breeding: A Study on Rapid Generational Advancement

Maria Zahid
Abstract

Arachis hypogaea (Peanut) is an important oilseed, legume, and fodder crop. Peanut is a crop that overcomes issues of food security. Plant breeders want to speed up breeding generations and shorten the time needed to produce new varieties. Speed breeding is considered an important tool for rapid generational advancement. The study aims to evaluate the potential of different peanut genotypes for rapid advancement. The results for each genotype were best overall for treatment 3's potting media mix, although BARI-2011 excelled in this treatment. It did not respond well to various therapies for specific features, which could be related to its genetic makeup. However, the focus of the current study is entirely on environmental variables rather than genetic variants. According to interpretation, BARI-2011 was a superb genotype in treatment 3, which also displayed great performance in comparison to other treatments. Therefore, it is concluded that this genotype can be used by plant breeders to get 3 to 4 generations of peanuts in one year under the facilities of speed breeding.
