APPLE SUPPLY CHAIN AND NET RETURNS TO GROWERS IN BALOCHISTAN PROVINCE
Zubair Khan
Abstract
Balochistan is Pakistan's largest fruit-producing province and is known as the "Fruit Basket of
Pakistan." The apple supply chain and net returns to apple growers in Balochistan were
investigated in this study. Data were obtained from a random sample of 120 apple producers and
contractors in the Balochistan districts of Killa Saifullah and Pishin. The data were analyzed
using descriptive statistics and linear regression tools. Growers' net returns in Pishin and Killa
Saifullah were Rs. 567850 and Rs. 506750 per acre per year. Selling orchards in the ripening
stage lowered net returns by Rs. 53292, while selling it in the blossoming stage cut net returns
by Rs. 2,56667. Contractors, local commission agents, transporters, and commission agents at
the major markets were the primary essential participants in the Apple supply chain. The local
commission agent received 4% of the overall sale, while those in the major city markets
received 10%. Transporters' fees were also much higher. Regression analysis revealed that
producer age, experience, orchard selling choice, marketing channel selection, water availability
and appropriate climatic conditions, distance to the major road, and infrastructure condition all
have significant effects on net returns. The study recommended the government to encourage
growers to employ drip irrigation systems by offering various incentives (subsidies, and credits)
and to connect small growers with large distributing firms directly in order to decrease the damaging role of transporters and commission agents.
