A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW ON PHYTOCHEMICAL AND THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS OF FRUIT
JUGNU JAHAN
Abstract
Regardless of the origin, bioactive natural materials have always been important as innovative medicinal agents. Both directly and indirectly, they have a significant impact on human health with their remarkable medical characteristics. Epidemiologic data confirms the link between a high fruit intake and a low risk of developing chronic diseases. Fruit species are highly valued and consumed all throughout the world which proves to lessen or even prevent chronic diseases for a number of biological reasons. Fruits include a lot of nutrients and in addition, parts of the fruit crops like fruit peels, leaves, extracts and barks also possess medicinal properties. In this review, the most important pharmacological activities like antidiabetic, antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, neuroprotective, anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, stimulation of the immune system, cell detoxification, cholesterol synthesis, and their ability to lower blood pressure by various fruits are been discussed. Several phytochemicals involved in this context are described with special emphasis on their structural properties and their relativity with human diseases.
