FLORAL BIOLOGY, BREEDING SYSTEM AND POLLINATION ECOLOGY OF CALOPHYLLUM INOPHYLLUM

Dr S. Vigneswaran
Abstract

This study delves into the floral biology, breeding system, and pollination dynamics of Calophyllum inophyllum, a tree species of significant importance due to its potential for oil yield. With a focus on understanding the intricate aspects of this species, our research explores the floral structures, reproductive mechanisms, and interactions with pollinators. Through a comprehensive analysis of floral biology, we uncover key insights into the morphological and physiological characteristics that underlie the reproductive process. Investigating the breeding system sheds light on the role of self-pollination and cross-pollination in this species, contributing to a deeper comprehension of its genetic diversity and reproductive success. Furthermore, our pollination studies unravel the intricate relationships between Calophyllum inophyllum and its pollinators, elucidating the strategies and mechanisms that drive successful pollination. This research not only advances our understanding of the ecological and evolutionary dynamics within Calophyllum inophyllum populations but also provides valuable information for potential cultivation and utilization of this tree species for oil production. The findings presented here contribute to the broader fields of plant reproductive biology, ecology, and sustainable resource management.
