CATEGORIZATION OF LEGUME VERSUS CEREAL BASED ARTIFICIAL DIETS AND THEIR NUTRIENTS TO EVALUATE PREMATURE AND MATURE BIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS OF SPODOPTERA LITURA FABRICIUS

MUHAMMAD SARWAR
Abstract

Abstract   The common armyworm Spodoptera litura Fabricius in family Noctuidae (Lepidoptera), is a generalist polyphagous herbivore feeding on leaves and fruits of more than 400 species of miscellaneous plants, having high reproductive capacity and migratory ability around the world. A viable mass production technology for S. litura using different artificial diets is vital for successfully conductance of certain pre-defined experimentations, like studying its biology and bioassays under laboratory conditions. For experimentation, the colony of S. litura was developed under laboratory conditions from field collected individuals, and its development biology compared on various three test diets; a diet based on bean, a diet having corn flour as an alternate of bean and a diet substituting bean flour and corn flour with chickpea flour. Based on results, various developmental parameters indicated that total life cycle on artificial diets in recipe of food based on chickpea or bean-based diet was superior for shorter developmental period (29.74 & 30.73 days, respectively) to support proper growth of S. litura as compared to other diet with corn flour (33.10 days). The growth parameters Ro= net rate of population growth, rm= intrinsic rate of increase and λ= finite rate of increase, resulting from life tables were also superior on chickpea or bean-based diets. Chickpea or bean legume being high-quality sources of vegetable and seed protein, fiber, carbohydrates and minerals formed an integral part in the diets for growth of S. litura in comparison to corn. Current rearing method and diets would be easily applicable and extremely advantageous for understanding phenology of S. litura intermediated through aberrations and or alterations in nutritious status of its hosts.
