Water Stress Indicators In Fruit Trees: The Case of Citrus, Olive, and Apple

NAZİHA ELBEY
Abstract

Competition for water resources is expected to increase as a result of population growth, urbanization, and climate change, with an emphasis on agriculture and especially on fruit trees which are widely planted in arid and semi-arid regions. In these regions, new water-saving irrigation strategies are being implemented, and most fruit trees are frequently subjected to some degree of water stress. The determination of the threshold water deficit level that will have a limited (i.e. tolerable) negative effect on plant growth and yield of fruit trees is critical for the successful implementation of new irrigation practices. Water stress indicators in olive, citrus, and apple trees that are highly responsive to water stress and those that can aid in the early detection of water stress must be identified. A number of stress indicators were critically reviewed in this article for their ability to determine the level of water stress.
