Abstract

EFFECT OF DIFFERENT SULPHUR AND FOLIAR APPLICATION OF BORON LEVELS ON THE PERFORMANCE OFSUNFLOWER HYBRIDS Muhammad Hussain and Inamullah Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Crop Production Sciences The University of Agriculture, Peshawar-Pakistan July, 2023   ABSTRACT A field experiment was carried out to study the effect of different sulphur and foliar application of boron levels on the performance of sunflower hybrids. The research was conducted at Agronomy Research, The University of Agriculture Peshawar during summer 2022. The experiment was laid out in RCBD split plot arrangement with three replications. Hybrids (Hysun-33 and Advanta-3040) with foliar boron at the rate 0, 2 and 4 kg ha-1) were applied in main plots, while in sub-plots sulphur at rate of (( 0, 15 and 30 kg ha-1) was incorporated in the soil. The plot size was 4m x 3m with 6 rows at proper R-R and P-P at 70 cm and 25 cm distance. In each plot, the sowing was carried out on the ridges. Results reveled that among the two sunflower hybrids were resulted that the Hysun-33 delayed flowering (60.26 days), highest leaf area (185.82 cm), maximum head diameter (10.83 cm), heads m-2 (12.80), seed weight head-1 (33.12 g), number of seeds head-1 (791), 1000 seed weight (43.25 g), higher seed yield (1281 kg ha-1 ),maximum harvest index (21.32 %), higher Oil content (47.26 %), highest chlorophyll (a) (23.25), highest chlorophyll (b) (21.56), total chlorophyll (30.77), highest carotenoid (31.28), highest catalase (2.41).while the second hybrids Advanta-3040 resulted that maximum taller plant height (158.50 cm), number of plants m-2 (12.80), maximum heads m-2 (12.80), biological yield (6906 kg ha-1), maximum ascorbate peroxides (2.83). However the sulphur application has no effect on days to flowering, leaf area, plant height, number of plants m-2, head diameter, heads m-2, days to maturity, seed weight head-1, 1000 grains weight (g), seed yield (kg ha-1), ascorbate peroxides (APX). Application of sulphur applied to plots treated with at the rate 30 kg ha-1 were recorded maximum number of seed head-1 (797), Oil content (47.94 %), while sulphur application applied at the rate of 15 kg ha-1 maximum biological yield (6996 kg ha-1), maximum catalase (2.28) as compare to control. Results showed that the plots treated with 2 kg ha-1 of foliar boron, delayed flowering (60.89 days), taller plant height (158.47 cm), number of plant m-2 (12.93), maximum heads m-2 (12.93), 1000 seed weight (43.55 g), seed yield (1293 kg ha-1), Oil content (47.59 %), ascorbate peroxides (2.84). however the foliar boron at the rate of 4 kg ha-1 results showed maximum leaf areas (188.95 cm), numbers of achene head-1 (791), higher biological yield (7125 kg ha-1),  total chlorophyll (30.60), however the Boron rate have no significant effect on days to maturity and Harvest index as compare to control. Interaction of B x S effect on biological yield, seed yield and harvest index was significantly affected, similarly the interaction H x S affected seed weight head-1, 1000 grains weight, biological yield, seed yield and harvest index was significantly. It is recommended that sunflower hybrid Hysun-33 Should be sown with 2 kg ha-1 of boron for higher seed yield. It is also recommended that sunflower hybrids Hysun-33 should be sown for higher oil content along with 30 kg ha-1 of sulphur as soil applied.
