Abstract

An experiment was carried out to determine the comparative efficiency of various botanical and an insecticide against Helicoverpa armigera Hubner at the Agriculture Research Institute, Tarnab, Peshawar, during 2022 in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The study comprises of eight treatments i.e neem seed extract, bakain, eucalyptus, neem seed+bakain extracts, neem seed+eucalyptus, bakain+eucalyptus, coragen along with a control. Results revealed that after 1st and 2nd spray, lowest larval population was recorded on coragen (0.90 and 0.52 larva/plant) while the highest larval population was recorded on neem seed extract (5.10 and 3.48) over the control treatment (6.09 and 5.49) larval plant. Highest percent reduction of H. armigera population in tomato crop after 1st and 2nd spray was recorded in coragen (68.73% and 81.44%) while lowest reduction was recorded in neem seed extract (10.06% and 16.4%). Similarly, lowest fruit percent infestation was also recorded in coragen (10.00%) while highest fruit infestation was recorded in neem seed extract (28.18%). In addition, lowest number of infested fruit was recorded in coragen (11.33) while highest was recorded in neem seed extract (30.33). The highest marketable yield was recorded in coragen treated plot (9593.3 kg/ha) while lowest was observed in neem seed extract treated lot (7833.7 kg/ha). However, coragen recorded highest CB Ratio (1: 46.07) while least CBR was recorded by neem seed + bakain extracts (1: 8.96). These findings concluded that the most effective insecticide was coragen against H. armigera but best possible alternative was eucalyptus in term of CBR. It is therefore recommended that eucalyptus can be used for the management of H. armigera in tomato crop under field condition.
