Abstract

ABSTRACT   An investigation entitled “Impact of root covering on production and lodging in maize varieties” was carried out at the Agronomy Research Farm (ARF), The University of Agriculture, Peshawar (UAP), Pakistan in summer season during 2022. Research was conducted in Randomized complete block design (RCB) with split-plot arrangement having four replications. Two factors i.e. brace roots covering and uncovering with soil applications i.e. BR1, 0 % uncovering and BR2 100 % covering around the plant were assigned to main plots at knee height stage of maize crop. The varieties i.e. Jalal, Azam, Gulabati and Jumbo were assigned to sub plots. Statistical analysis exhibited that covering of brace roots 100 % with soil showed maximum number of grains ear-1 (323.7), plant height (195.3 cm), thousand grains weight (236.0 g), biological yield (13560 kg ha-1), grain yield (3692 kg ha-1) and harvest index (27 %). Brace roots covering 100 % with soil resulted minimum lodging of (8 %). Among varieties, Azam variety of maize produced maximum number of grains ear-1 (345), thousand grains weight (241.7 g) and grain yield (3523 kg ha-1), variety Jumbo of maize has increased plant height (233.3 cm), minimum lodging (9 %) and maximum biological yield (15908 kg ha-1) and variety Gulabati of maize has maximum lodging (25 %) and minimum on other yield attributes. It was concluded that brace roots covering, treated with soil around the crop increased yield attributes in maize. Variety Azam would produce higher grain yield while variety Jumbo would have increased plant height and greater biological yield in terms of fodder production and are highly recommended for grain and livestock feed in agro-ecological condition of Peshawar valley.
