Maize hybrids growth and yield in response to nitrogen levels.

Mohammad Khalid
Abstract

ABSTRACT Nitrogen is an important factor for obtaining higher yield production of maize. The optimum level of nitrogen and suitable maize hybrid is important for growth and yield of maize. So therefore, an experiment was laid out to examine maize hybrids growth and yield responses to nitrogen application in summer 2022 at Agronomy Research Farm, the University of Agriculture Peshawar. The experiment was conducted in RCB design, with 4 replications and consisted of two factorial arrangements. Four maize hybrids (Pioneer-30k08, Pioneer-3025, CS220, Bilal hybrid) and 4 levels of nitrogen (0, 100, 150, 200’ kg ha-1) were the factors used in the experiment. The finding of our experiment revealed that maize hybrids and nitrogen levels had significantly affected all the studied parameters except days to emergence, emergence m-2 and no. of plants at harvest. Maximum days to tasseling (64.1 days), silking (69 days), single leaf area (320.20 cm2), leaf area index (3.1), days to physiological maturity (113.9 days), plant height (175.1 cm), ear plant-1 (1.4), ear length (15.5 cm), grain rows per ear (12.3), grains ear-1 (376.6), 1000 grains weight (277.8 g), biological yield (11038 kg ha-1), grain yield (4419 kg ha-1 and harvest index (39.2%) were produced by hybrids Pioneer- 30k08. Among nitrogen levels, maximum days to tasseling (65.4 days), silking (70 days), single leaf area (354.1 cm2), leaf area index (2.66), days to physiological maturity (113.5 days), plant height (196.8 cm), ear length (17.6 cm), grain rows ear-1 (12.4), grains ear-1 (423.2), 1000 grain weight (278.4 g), biological yield (11775 kg ha-1), grain yield (4811 kg ha-1) and harvest index (40.81%) were obtained from plot received 200 kg ha-1 nitrogen. Finally, our conclusion is that maize hybrid Pioneer-30k08 along with 200 kg per hectare nitrogen performed well and produced higher growth and yield and is recommended for higher maize productivity.
