PRELIMINARY PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING, PHARMACOGNOSTIC AND PHYSICOCHEMICAL STUDIES OF ORGANIC AND AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF Cymbopogon commutatus LEAVES
Mobeen Islam
Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate pharmacognostic, phytochemical and physicochemical characteristics of methanolic and aqueous extract of Cymbopogon commutatus leaves. Pharmacognostic study was performed by organoleptic, macroscopic, powder microscopy and histological analysis. Phytochemical and physiochemical evaluation were carried out using different chemical reagents. Organoleptic and microscopic evaluation used as a tool for identification of specific characteristic features of plant material. The qualitative phytochemical analysis indicated the presence of proteins, carbohydrates, phenols, tannins, saponins, amino acids, flavonoids, steroids, glycosides, alkaloids and volatile oil. Physicochemical evaluation based on determination of moisture content, total ash and fluorescence behavior on treatment with different solvents. The comprehensive pharmacognostic profile, phytochemical information, physicochemical properties and findings of fluorescence analysis will aid in developing standards for quality, purity and plant authentication. Additionally, this information will be significant to prevent the plant material from adulteration and ensure the quality of this valuable indigenous plant.
