Evaluation of In-vessel composting for locally generated paper waste at subtropical environment

Abstract

Paper and pulp industries are among the major sources of pollution, producing a voluminous amount of waste. Paper is composed mainly of cellulosic fibers and its hydrolysis requires cellulase as an essential element. Cellulolytic enzymes play a key role in the biodegradation process. The present study involves the use of paper waste as feedstock for composting and isolation & characterization of effective cellulase producing microorganisms from the In-vessel compost pile. In-vessel compost was produced with fruit waste, paper bagasse, grass clippings and leaves. A total of 23 distinct morphological fungal isolates were isolated from compost samples and were subjected to qualitative and quantitative cellulase activity. Out of which, six fungal isolates were purified and subjected to molecular identification. The isolates were identified as Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus fumigatus. Significantly higher numbers of cellulolytic fungi (p < 0.05) were isolated from samples of compost pile with paper than of isolates in control (CC). Fungal isolates were able to produce endoglucanase over a range of  temperatures (40-60 ºC) tested. The matured  compost was also supportive for the growth and yield of Abelmoschus esculentus. This study provides an improved understanding of paper based compost and its application as an organic fertilizer
