Abstract

Preserving gene resources is important for sustainable agriculture.  Turkey and Cyprus are countries that are the homeland of artichokes. Moreover; It is important to determine the flavonoid and phenolic contents that are beneficial for health. In future breeding studies, local varieties, wild types, flavonoid and phenolic compounds are important. In this study, The collection of local and wild artichokes creates the Cynara gene pool, whose morphological features, total flavonoid and phenolic contents are determined in accordance with UPOV criteria. Total phenolic content was calculated as 4.97 mg GAE/g in Sakızvariety, 6.41 mg GAE/g in early Cyprus variety and 5.22 mg GAE/g t in Hasanağa. Total flavonoid content was 1.05 mg CE/g in Sakız,  3.77 mg CE/g in early Cyprus, 1.45 mg CE/g in Hasanağa (Bayrampaşa) type, 2.70 mg CE/g and 2.10 mg in Cynara cornigera. In Cynara cardunculus, GAE/g. All local varieties and wilds showed 97.89% variation in morphological characters.  As a result of the research, morphological features were determined in accordance with the UPOV criteria, and total phenolic and total flavonoid contents were also determined. The values obtained from the determination of total phenolic and flavonoid contents, the collected local varieties and wild ones, and the relationship between phenolic content and flavonoids were examined. With the results obtained, it were determined that the parents will be used in the breeding program. Thus, it is thought that an innovation can be brought to artichoke breeding studies by evaluating these features and their relations with each other in terms of artichoke breeding and using these materials in future breeding programs.
