Abstract

ABSTRACT  An experiment was conducted on “The effects of Willow bark extracts and their times of application on flower and seed production of local Zinnia” at ornamental horticulture nursery, The University of Agriculture Peshawar, during the year 2022. The experiment was laid out in Randomized complete block design (RCBD) with two factors arranged in split plot.   Willow bark extract (WBE) application time (7, 14, 21 days after transplantation) was kept in main plot (Factor A) while their concentrations (0, 4, 6, 8 and 10%) were kept in sub plots (Factor B). It is evident from results that WBE and application time had significant effect on the studied attributes. While their interaction was non-significant. Mean data pertaining to WBE concentrations revealed that WBE sprayed at 10% concentration resulted in maximum leaves plant-1 (231.22), branches plant-1 (9.26), leaf area (1547.22 cm2), chlorophyll content (58.67 SPAD), flower diameter (8.67 cm), flowers plant-1 (19.01), plant height (95.32 cm), extended vase life (6.76 days) with maximum flower fresh & dry weight (11.49 g & 2.96 g), seed yield plant-1 (6.68 g) and least days to flowering (32.81). While plants of control plots sprayed with distilled water (0% WBE) produced least leaves plant-1 (194.44), branches plant-1 (7.89), leaf area (1171.11 cm2), chlorophyll content (46.20 SPAD), flower diameter (6.09 cm), flowers plant-1 (12.64), plant height (81.51 cm), vase life (5.52 days) with minimum flower fresh & dry weight (6.66 g and 1.65 g), seed yield plant-1 (5.24 g) and more days to flowering (40.54 days). Among the application times of WBE, foliar application of WBE after 14 days of transplantation produced maximum number of leaves plant-1 (226.27), branches plant-1 (8.86), leaf area (1405.67 cm2), chlorophyll content (54.20 SPAD), least days to flowering (32.83 days) with maximum flower diameter (8.04 cm), flowers plant-1 (17.51), plant height (93.58 cm), vase life (6.39 days), flower fresh & dry weight (9.47 g & 2.44 g) and maximum seed yield plant-1 (6.36 g). It is concluded that WBE 10% concentration was most effective while application of WBE after 14 days of transplantation is recommended for better flower production of local zinnia in Peshawar condition.
