Abstract
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of ethanol extracts of whole plants of Arenaria serpyllifolia L., Fragaria nubicola(Hook.f.) and Hacekelia uncinata Royle ex Benth using carrageenan induced edema and hot plate model in mice.
Methods: Ethanol extracts of A. serpyllifolia , F. nubicola and H. uncinata whole plants at doses of 100, 300 and 800 mg/kg body weight were administered orally to mice to find the acute toxicity. Mice were observed for 72 hours for toxicity observation. Antiinflammatory activity was investigated using carrageenan induced paw edema at 100, 200 amd 400 mg/kg doses while analgesic activity was investigated by using hot plate model in mice at 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg dose, p.o.
Results: During acute toxicity no mortality was seen even after three days of observational period which showed that ethanol extracts of all three plants were safe upto 800 mg/kg . During the anti-inflammatory assessment of A. serpyllifolia extract it is found that the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg significantly reduced the paw edema after 3 hours of carrageenan injection which was continued upto 4 hours while the extract of F.nubicola and H.uncinata significantly inhibited the paw edema at 200 and 400 mg/kg doses after 2 hours of carrageenan induction. In analgesic evaluation the A. serpyllifolia extract at 400mg/kg reduced the licking time at 90 and 60 min. While the maximum prolongation of the reaction time of jumping and licking was observed for both F.nubicola and H.uncinata extracts at 200 and 400mg/kg at 60, 90 and 120 min .
Conclusions: This study exhibites that ethanol extracts of A. serpyllifolia, F.nubicola and H.uncinata possess anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities which may be due to the inhibition of cyclooxygenase pathways and it also provide scientific foundation to the traditional uses of these plants in the treatment of wound healing and pain management.
