Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine the antioxidant activity and volatile oil profile of endemic Cirsium trachylepis. The volatile oil content of endemic Cirsium trachylepis was analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) using Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME). In addition, total phenolic content and the capacity of antioxidant activity measured by DPPH• and FRAP assays were determined. A total of 32 (87.89%) volatile compounds were identified in Cirsium trachylepis. Pentadecanolide (15.16%) was found to be the major volatile oil in plant sample. When the fatty acid content was examined, palmitic acid (7.52%) was determined as the common and main fatty acid for the plant sample. The total phenolic content was found to be 19.6±0.20 mg/g GAE sample. FRAP and DPPH• values were found to be 22.23±0.22 µmol Fe/g sample and 3.91±0.85 mg/ml, respectively.
