TAXONOMIC STUDY ON VOLVOCOPHYCEAE SHAMEEL FROM CERTAIN AREAS OF THE PUNJAB

Abstract: Eight species of green microalgae belonging to the genera Chlorella, Chlorococcum, Eudorina, Gonium, Oocystis, Pandorina and Volvox were collected from various freshwater habitats of Lahore, Pasrur and Sialkot districts of the Punjab Province of Pakistan during July 2003 and December 2004. They were microscopically examined and are taxonomically described for the first time from these areas. Although they occurred in all the seasons of the year but were found to grow mostly in summer and winter. The species Chlorococcum arenosum, Eudorina elegans, Gonium formossum and Volvox aureus are being reported for the first time from Pakistan.
