VALIDITY OF NEW SPECIES AND SUBSPECIES OF AMPHISOLENIA STEIN S.M. SAIFULLAH Abstract: Amphisolenia Stein is a warm water marine planktonic dinoflagellate (Taylor, 1976). Saifullah & Hassan (1973) reported two new species (Amphisolenia biprojecta Saifullah et Hassan and A. taylorii Saifullah et Hassan) and a new subspecies (A. taylorii subsp. manorensis Saifullah et Hassan) from the inshore waters of Karachi. They described in detail the characters of the taxa along with illustrations but did not provide their latin diagnoses, which makes their publication invalid according to ICBN article 36.1 (Grueter et al., 1994). Soumia (1978) was the first one to point out this shortcoming. In order to validate the publication, the latin diagnoses of all the three taxa are given as under: Institute of Marine Sciences. University of Karachi, Karachi-75270. Pakistan. |
